The Trust Deed of the present School is dated 28th January 1860, the first trustees being Lord Cavendish and the Rev. Thomas Remington. The site was provided by the Duke of Devonshire.

Lower Allithwaite (Cartmel) Church of England Voluntary Controlled School succeeded the National School in 1903 and a new instrument of management was established by an order of the Minister of Education on 27th October 1953. As a controlled school it is maintained by the local Education authority.
Cartmel C of E Primary School has 63 children as at September 2009. The children are placed in mixed year groups within three classes. Average class sizes are 21, which makes for an excellent ratio of pupils to teachers. Mixed year groups enable pupils to work together enhancing the close, caring family atmosphere of our school. The children’s work is carefully planned and differentiated to meet the age, ability and needs of each child.
Reception and Key Stage 1 pupils have a large classroom within easy reach of their own cloakroom and toilets. There is also a full time Teaching Assistant working with the class teacher . The Key Stage 2 children are in two classrooms with shared cloakrooms and toilet areas.
